The Government of The Gambia, through the Ministry of Trade, Industry, Regional Integration and Employment in collaboration with Ministry of Finance and Ministry of Agriculture intends to procure rice for COVID 19 food support to vulnerable Gambian farmers.

This is to inform the general public that, the tender opening for the procurement of rice for COVID-19 food support to vulnerable Gambian farmers which was slated for the 21st October 2020. The committee decided to hold an in-door bid opening due to the large number of bidders, and to adhere the COVID-19 rules and regulations. The Committee has received over 270 bidders to date and more is expected before the deadline of 21st October 2020.

The Department of Labour under the Ministry of Trade, Industry, Regional Integration and Employment on Wednesday, 7th October 2020 inaugurated the recently established unit for job consulting at a ceremony held at Department of Labour complex in Fajara.

The building was renovated by IOM under the project “Bridging together youth, Diaspora and local authorities for an integrated approach to promote employment and address irregular migration in The Gambia” funded through the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation.

Mr Hassan Gaye, Deputy Permanent Secretary, for Industry, Investment and Employment said the opening of the first public job center in the country is a significant achievement in strengthening employment service in the country. This will provide job seekers access to facilities in search of a job.

“I am personally grateful to the IOM for the giant strives they are making in addressing the root cause of unemployment in The Gambia. Since the presence of the IOM in the country, significant progress has been registered by the organization in various interventions ranging from skills training, Entrepreneurial training, reintegration and settlement of returnees amongst others with the ambition to curb unemployment, especially migrant returnees and young entrepreneurs,” DPS Gaye stated.

Nyallow Barrow, Commissioner of Labor said the renovated job center by IOM will complement Gambia government efforts in tackling unemployment. The job center will cater for career counselling for job seekers and migrant returnees.loyment in the country.

Gaye pointed out that the Public Employment Service domiciled at the Department of Labour will go a long way in addressing the unemployment rate by providing labour market information in this country. I have no doubt both employers and potential employees will grab the opportunities that will be availed to them by this service.

DPS Gaye further said: “ The Government of the Gambia will ensure that Private Employment Agents (PEA) register with the Public Employment Service to ensure proper checks and balances on their activities. Once the Public Employment Service is fully operational, all Government Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) will be using this service for vacancy advertisements. Links will be provided for user-friendly online assistants for job applicants, skills matching and the linkage of employers and potential employees.”

Fumiko Nagana, Chief of Mission, International Organisation for Migration (IOM) said the job center will do much-needed career counseling for potential job seekers, adding that this will address government readiness to curb unemployment in the country.
