The modernized Wellingaraba Lumo in the Lower River Region was officially inaugurated on Wednesday 17th June 2026, providing improved facilities aimed at boosting cross-border trade, enhancing livelihoods, and strengthening regional integration among communities in The Gambia and neighbouring countries.
The project was funded by the ECOWAS Commission through the ECOWAS Cross-Border Cooperation Support Programme (ECBCSP) and implemented by the Ministry of Trade, Industry, Regional Integration and Employment (MoTIE) in partnership with the Mansakonko Area Council and the Village Development Committee of Wellingaraba.
The upgraded market now features modern market sheds, a perimeter fence, concrete-paved grounds, toilet facilities, a solar-powered borehole with water taps, and solar-powered streetlights. The new infrastructure is expected to improve hygiene and sanitation, enhance security, facilitate commercial activities, and create a more conducive environment for traders and customers.
The inauguration ceremony was attended by a delegation from the ECOWAS Commission led by the Director of Free Movement, Migration and Tourism, representatives of MoTIE, officials of the Mansakonko Area Council, the Chief of Jarra East representing the Governor of the Lower River Region, community leaders, traders, and other stakeholders.
Speaking on behalf of the Honourable Minister of Trade, Industry, Regional Integration and Employment, Deputy Permanent Secretary Mr. Mamadi Dampha described the project as a landmark achievement that reflects the collective commitment of The Gambia and ECOWAS to promoting regional integration, cross-border cooperation, and economic development.
He expressed appreciation to the ECOWAS Commission for its continued support in advancing regional integration and improving the livelihoods of communities across the region.
Mr. Dampha noted that the newly installed facilities would significantly improve hygiene, safety, and the overall trading environment for market users. He emphasized that Wellingaraba Lumo serves as an important centre of economic activity, bringing together traders and buyers from across The Gambia and neighbouring countries, particularly Senegal and Guinea-Bissau.
According to him, the market plays a vital role in strengthening social and economic ties among border communities while contributing to the ECOWAS vision of a prosperous, integrated, and borderless region.
He further highlighted the importance of markets in supporting livelihoods, creating employment opportunities, empowering women and youth entrepreneurs, and driving local economic development. The improved facilities, he said, are expected to enhance the competitiveness of traders, reduce post-harvest losses, and increase incomes for market vendors.
Mr. Dampha called on traders, community leaders, and local authorities to take ownership of the facilities and ensure their proper maintenance to guarantee the long-term sustainability of the investment.
He noted that the successful completion of the project demonstrates the value of strong partnerships and regional cooperation in delivering tangible benefits to communities.
The Deputy Permanent Secretary concluded by thanking the ECOWAS Commission, local authorities, community leaders, contractors, and all stakeholders who contributed to the successful implementation of the project before officially declaring the modernized Wellingaraba Lumo open.
The modernization of Wellingaraba Lumo is expected to enhance cross-border trade, improve market access for local producers and traders, and contribute to sustainable economic growth and regional integration in the Lower River Region and beyond.
